A terrorist dressed in an IDF uniform opened fire at the central bus station of Afula in north-central Israel, killing three Israelis and wounding 13.

Around 2 pm, the gunman got off the northbound 842 bus from Tel Aviv to Kiryat Shmona during a stop in Afula and opened fire on passersby with an M-16 rifle and emptied two ammunition clips, according to Israeli Television. Eyewitnesses reported that he "looked like an Israeli soldier in every way" - until he started shooting.

The terrorist was killed by shots from a security guard, part of a special transport protection unit.

There are reports that an additional person, suspected of being an accomplice to the terrorist, was seen escaping from the area of the attack. Security forces immediately sealed off the entire region with roadblocks.

The exact identity of the terrorist who carried out the attack is reportedly known by security forces, but censorship has been imposed to prevent publication of his name. There are unconfirmed reports that he came from the Jenin area.

Just before the attack, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met with Palestinian Ministers Saeb Erekat and Abu Ala to discuss implementation of cease-fire terms. Included in the Israeli steps of easing the closure that were already implemented was lifting of blockades and removal of tanks around the city of Jenin.

It is not clear whether tomorrow's scheduled coordination meeting of senior Israeli and Palestinian security officials will take place as planned.
