"Terrorism"
vs. "Gunplay" By Reuven Koret October 3, 2001 Prominently displayed on the CNN home page last night was a link to an "About Us" page with the title "CNN on its use of the word 'terrorist'" and the following clarification: "There have been false reports that CNN has not used the word "terrorist" to refer to those who attacked the World Trade Center and Pentagon. In fact, CNN has consistently and repeatedly referred to the attackers and hijackers as terrorists, and it will continue to do so." On the same homepage there was a link to the story of how two Palestinian "gunmen" from the Hamas organization in military uniform, heavily armed with automatic weapons and grenades, infiltrated into the Israeli settlement of Alei Sinai. There they killed a couple of teenagers walking on a path, shot at every human being they met, and threw grenades into homes they passed. They barricaded themselves into a home, shooting and tossing grenades at Israeli security forces for two hours until being killed by commandos. Here is how CNN.com headlined its news report: 2 Israelis, 2 Palestinians die in Gaza gunplay From this we may conclude that, if the September 11 attacks on New York took place in an Israeli city, the CNN headline would be something like this: Israelis, 19 Arabs die in Tel Aviv jetplay CNN welcomes reader comments sent through their feedback form Feel free to email us a copy of your communication
