MK Gal-On questioned over alleged financial irregularities
Police have been questioning MK Zehava Gal-On (Meretz) after a complaint was filed against her by Ofer Bronstein, her predecessor as Director General of the International Center for Peace. The complaint maintained that once Gal-On took over, financial irregularities began to appear. Gal-On had previously filed a similar complaint against Bronstein.

Sappers "pop" Arafat balloons feared to be booby-trapped
Balloons in the colors of the Palestinian flag with photographs of PA Chairman Yasser Arafat floated into Israeli territory from over the Lebanese border this afternoon. Residents of Kibbutz Amir feared the balloons were booby-trapped and alerted the police bomb squad.

Five Palestinians arrested overnight in Kalandia
Police and security forces arrested overnight five Palestinians, suspected of involvement in terrorist activities, in the Kalandia refugee camp north of Jerusalem.

PA begins repairing airport runway
The PA has begun repairing the runways of the Dahaniya airport in the southern Gaza Strip, which were damaged by Israel at the beginning of the month. An agreement allowing the repairs was reached with Israeli security officials last week. The PA is expecting Israel to allow the reopening of the airport.

Zinni to return to Middle East this week
Middle East special envoy General Anthony Zinni is due to return to the region on Thursday for a second attempt at brokering peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Palestinian officials confirm the report, but PM Ariel Sharon's spokesman Ra'anan Gissin said that he has not been informed that Zinni was returning to the region.

Peres: Stop attacks on Arafat's image
Foreign Affairs Minister Shimon Peres has criticized Israel's official policy of labeling Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat as supporting terror, calling it counterproductive. He requested that Israel stop its international attacks on Arafat's image.

Budget for 2002 - maybe only in March
The government's budget for the year 2002 may only be agreed upon in March, according to Communications Minister Reuven Rivlin. If by the end of March the budget isn't approved by the Knesset, new elections would be held. PM Ariel Sharon does not have enough support to pass the proposed budget in the Knesset at this time due to its suggested cuts of over six billion shekels.

IDF arrests Force 17 man in Gaza
Force 17 member Riad Masoud Sa'adi Iyyad was arrested by Israeli undercover troops near the Netzarim junction this morning. According to Israeli security sources, Iyyad was responsible for shooting and mortar attacks on Israeli targets.

IDF soldiers stationed in southern Gaza on the Egyptian border came under terrorist fire overnight. No one was reported injured in the attack.

Sharon opposes Katsav visit to Ramallah
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has objected to the proposal that President Moshe Katsav address the Palestinian Legislative Council in Ramallah. It was proposed that Katsav call for a one year cease-fire to allow negotiations to take place, however the idea was reportedly called "foolish and stupid" by Sharon's aides.

IDF arrests Hamas man in overnight raid
Three Palestinian men, one of them a Hamas member, were arrested by special IDF forces in an overnight raid in Kabatiya, south of Jenin. The men are suspected of participating in terrorist activities and are currently being questioned by the Shin Bet.
