Letter to Ariel Sharon

Dear Prime Minister Sharon,

An upsetting piece of information has reached us, that you are going to accept the Mitchell Report almost in its entirety. On the very day of "Nakba" we learn that you are willing to accept a complete freeze on settlements. Even "natural growth" can now only be vertical, exactly as in the ghettos in the Middle Ages!

We just listened to Arafat's speech for "Catastrophe Day" on CNN. There is no doubt that Arafat is still dreaming to force us out of our homeland. Are you planning to be the Shepherd who will lead the Jewish Sheep to slaughter?

We had such high hopes for you, Arik Sharon! We worked so hard to elect you, in order to stop those who would betray us to the murderer Arafat.

We remember so well an article of yours, which appeared in the Jerusalem Post, sometime in the year of 1993. It was entitled "You Can't Dance With a Murderer." This is as true now as when you wrote this article. How could we have failed to learn this bitter lesson during the last eight years?

Be strong, Arik, and come to the rescue of your People Israel as you have done almost all your life. Don't repeat the mistake of Yamit! We remember listening to the radio on the day we abandoned Yamit. One of the PLO murderers jubilantly declared: "Now that we have established the principle that the Jews will abandon a settlement, we will go on from there!"

In fact, lets stop talking about "settlements." Lets call them by their proper name, Jewish communities in the Land which the G-d of Israel has promised us. Or has the Tanach, the word of Hashem, also become an obstacle to peace?

Respectfully,
Ruth and Nadia Matar
